Brighton-based arts collective Nimbus is working on a legacy project for BSUH as part of Connect, the public art programme for the redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH). Their project is to create a permanent artwork celebrating the history and heritage of the RSCH to be sited in the new hospital.
In doing so, they will be working closely with and drawing on the findings of the Heritage Lottery Funded project, the Royal Sussex County Hospital A People’s History from the 19th Century to the 21st Century, which is identifying, preserving and interpreting the social heritage of the hospital leading up to the development. Nimbus will be creatively responding to this heritage research to create an artwork for the new hospital that responds to and reflects its rich and varied history.
AIMS
The Heritage and History of The Royal Sussex County Hospital is an important story which fascinates people from outside and within the organisation. It provides a vehicle for us to think about the way care is offered and also for how the hospital contributes to the cultural community of the city.
This Nimbus commission will explore, interpret and celebrate the history of the Royal Sussex County Hospital. In doing so, it will help ensure that the heritage and culture of the old hospital is brought forward into the 3Ts Redevelopment to create a strong sense of place and identity, valuing the people and stories of the past within the context of the new.
It may also provide a vehicle or framework for us to think about the way care has been and is currently delivered and also for how the hospital contributes to the civic and cultural community of the city.
The aims of this project are to:
• Celebrate the histories and heritage of the Royal Sussex County Hospital
• Ease the transition from old to new facilities
• Promote a sense of ownership and civic pride of the existing and new hospitals
• Provide distraction, pleasure and stimulus to patients, staff and visitors
